Worli cops shut entry to BWSL from their end at 1.30 am to ease traffic after commuter complaints pour in

The Bandra-Worli Sea Link craze hit the city at 7 am yesterday. And 18-and-a-half hours later, it showed no signs of abating.

Even at 1.30 am today, the BWSL was so clogged by Mumbaikars taking joy rides that the police had to shut down the Worli entry to the bridge.

The excitement was such that the commuters were not only taking a number of rounds on the sea link, but also stopping mid-way to capture the moment with their cameras.

This resulted in a traffic jam, which plagued the bridge throughout the day, extending into the night.

The flow of traffic was equally bad on both ends of the sea link, angering several commuters.

"It took us at least two hours for us to come out of this havoc," said one commuter who took the BWSL route from Bandra to Worli.

With the traffic department handling the crowd on the bridge, the Worli police were asked to man the Worli end of the bridge to ease the situation.

One Worli police inspector said, "People are so excited that they are taking rounds of the sea link twice and thrice. They are even stopping their cars and clicking pictures.

As a result, genuine commuters using this bridge have been stuck for hours. We got a call from the control room say people stuck in traffic had been calling and complaining about the mess.

Why should they have to suffer? So, we are closing one side the entry from Worli to the sea link for a while."

The move, as expected, elicited anger among joy riders. Several families were seen arguing with the cops.

One of them even stepped out of the car and started fighting with the police, who eventually gave in to him.

The entry was re-opened after 30 minutes.

The craze over the bridge, however, showed no signs of dying even at 3 am, when MiD DAY left the spot.
